I just unboxed and installed Adobe Photoshop CS4, so I’m ready to offer some first impressions on the PC version. Speed Photoshop CS4 seems a lot faster than previous versions. There are many things that frustrated me in CS3 that no longer are present. In CS3, it was kind of clunky when you wanted to drag a window outside of the main Photoshop window, but in CS4 it’s quick and fluid like you would expect. Another performance boost that I noticed is the menu system. The menus in Photoshop are huge, due to the insane amount of filters and features they provide, so it’s easy to see why the menu system could be a bit sluggish. Right away, I noticed that the menus load immediately, and the application launches a lot quicker. (Read the full post about ‘Adobe Photoshop CS4 first impressions’…)

Just how fast does your operating system boot up? Most of us use Windows, and every single time we boot up Windows, we tend to spend at least a minute of our lives drumming our fingers on the desk or doing something equally worthless. Well, perhaps news of Linux-powered computer booting up within 2.97 seconds might move your heart to consider a switch? According to Lineo from Japan, this new technology is known as Warp 2 and comprises of a bootloader, a customised Linux software stack, and a ‘hibernation driver’ that is akin to familiar suspend-to-disk software. What sets this apart is Lineo’s hibernation driver writing a snapshot of RAM into its flash memory instead of to a hard disk, hence saving multiple alternative system snapshots for a (much) quicker boot up time. Could this be possible - the merry folk in France being able to get their hands on the iphone 3G for just €99? There’s a high possibility of that happening according to a new promotional flyer from Orange, although users will have to tie themselves down to a 2-year contract. We also have no idea whether this means one will have to sign up for the more expensive monthly rate plans or not, but the price tag is certainly tempting.
